1066 swimmers - Swimming Club

Website-header

1066 swimmers was established in 1991 and affiliated to Swim England to promote competitive swimming in a friendly supportive environment. Our main is aim for you to enjoy swimming.

The club is run for its members on a non-profit making basis by a team of parent volunteers and a team of qualified teachers/coaches supported by some of our older squad members. In 2003 1066 swimmers achieved Silver Swim21 accreditation (the first in the South-East Region) and the Sport England Clubmark, and were also awarded 'Sussex Swimming Club of the Year 2002-3'

The club has five progressive lessons groups taking non-swimmers from the age of 4 and teaching water skills and stroke technique through to a standard were they can move on to the competitive groups.

We have two Saturday sessions and three Sunday sessions available to the club to develop swimmers whilst maintaining class sizes no greater than 8.

The transition group  (Stage 6/7) is the "bridge" from lessons through to squads, building up their stamina and fitness. The club also welcomes any swimmer who has outgrown their swim schools and wish to continue to develop their skills.  Swimmers develop stamina and stroke technique, developing at their own pace until they and the coaches/teachers feel ready for squads. Sessions available are the child's normal swim lesson day and one other arranged in a squad session (either on Monday, Wednesday or Sunday).

Squads offer opportunities for competition from club championships to open competition events at all levels, though some swimmers may prefer not to compete, and develop their skills and stamina for fitness, fun and camaraderie at the club.

Swimmers are treated as individuals and graduate from each group as their skills develop. All groups are led by a teacher qualified to at least Swim England Level 2. Lower groups are assisted by members from the competitive club. These volunteers are accomplished swimmers in their own right and use the skills gained in their training to help the new generation of swimmers. The club will also try and support those aged 16+ swim member volunteers who now expressed a wish to become qualified swim teachers which might lead them to their first part-time job.
