With the Sussex ASA changing the dates at late notice of the County
Championships it meant 18 of 1066 swimmers were still in Germany at the
International Swimming Meet instead of being at K2, but still the few
remaining flew the flag proudly for the local swimming club.
Young Chloe Pollard,11, recorded a personal best and fast time in the 100m
backstroke heats to spearhead the Final. She certainly endorsed the label of
being favourite by bringing home another Gold medal for her very increasing
medal cabinet. Chloe was also the fastest in her age group in both the 200m
backstroke and 200m freestyle. The 100m butterfly saw her reach the Final
where she was pipped into fourth place thus just missing another medal but she
captured third spot in the gruelling 400m IM. All these swims were quicker
than she had previously done.
Victoria Turner,14, eased into the Final of the 100m backstroke in a
National Qualifying time and continued her dominance of the event by clearly
winning the Final by a large margin. She then contested the Open Final
finishing fourth. The 50m backstroke saw her recorded a personal best with the
fastest time of the day but unfortunately in the Open Final she come home
third.
Adam Rouncivell,15, who was suffering severely from a virus, managed to
reach the Final of the 100m freestyle and with great determination came second
to merit a silver medal. Unfortunately he had to withdraw from his other swims
in which he stood a very good chance in winning more medals.
Darius Khalesi,12, improved in all his swims over the weekend culminating
with a place in the Final of the 100m breaststroke where he finished seventh
overall and it was the same position he ended up in the 200m event. His 200m
IM earned him a top ten ranking along with a vast pb in the 100m freestyle it
was a good championships for him.
Another promising 1066 swimmer, Jess Honeysett, clocked a personal best in
both heats and final of the 100m backstroke to finish seventh overall. Jess
smashed her time in the 200m backstroke to finish in the top ten.
Brandon Johnson,10, came away from the Sussex Championships with a top ten
position in the 50m freestyle with was a much better time along with a
personal best in the 100m IM.
Carys Williams,10, competed in the 50m backstroke and with a pb finished in
the top twenty swimmers in the County.
